Chapter 7: Synthesizing Good Design: Principles and Patterns

Minimize work, defined as:
-Logical work (comprehension of text and organizational structures)
-Perceptual work (decoding visual layouts and semantics of shape, size, color)
-Mnemonic work (recall of passwords, commands)
-Physical/motor work (number of keystrokes, mouse movement)

Design Principles
-Conceptual - what a product is and how it fits into context
-Interaction - how a product should behave
-Interface - the look and feel of an interace

Style guides rigidly define the look and feel of an interace according to corporate branding and usability guidelines.

Types of interaction design patterns:
-Postural - help determine the overall product stance in relation to the user.
-Structural - solves problems that relate to the management of information display and access.
-Behavioral - system and widget behaviors

Interaction Design Imperatives
Interaction designers should create design solutions that are:
-Ethical
-Purposeful
-Pragmatic
-Elegant
